Chapter 23 of the Suwen: The Spleen

The Spleen stores the Yi
According to Chapter 23 of the Suwen, the Spleen stores the Yi spirit. Yi is a picture of “sound” over the “heart,” and while it is often translated as “intelligence” or “thought,” it really speaks to the resonant frequencies of the macrocosm to the human being. When the Spleen is healthy, the Yi is able to communicate with the frequencies of the macrocosm in order to use the process of through to direct our actions. This creates a rhythmic response to change that is in tune with the motions of the universe. When we are plagued by melancholy, too much sitting or inactivity, or we allow ourselves to think too much and take credit for those thoughts, our Yi becomes damaged and begins playing to its own tune.
The thoughts we receive from the universe can be likened to notes in a song. Our Spleen must be generating enough power to comfortably house the Yi so that it can receive the song and transmit its meaning to us appropriately. As physicians, it is of great importance that we allow our Spleen plenty of rest and make motions to tonify and appreciate it in our lives. In this way, we can provide a safe and welcome home for the Yi to transmit the song of the Heavens to us, and in this way, we can be instructed in proper healing techniques for our patients.
