The Lung Jieqi 節氣
Lìchūn 立春
The seasonal node of 立春 begins on February 4th. This is considered the “Start of Spring.” The character, 立, literally means to “erect,” and this certainly has connotations having to do with the erecting of the shoots coming out of the ground. Once again, this points in a direction of righteousness and honesty, as these plants are erected and begin to swell with the force of nature.
春 is literally a picture of grass being pushed up by the sun, and easily enforces the idea of Hexagram 11. The sun (Heaven) is on the bottom while the shoots of the Earth have a position atop.
At this time of year, the weather alternates between cold and warm, looking for the right balance. The lung is in charge of finding the balance of temperature within the body.
Yǔshuǐ 雨水
The second seasonal node begins on February 19th. It literally means, “rain water.” At this time, there is more rain than snow as nature is being freed from the icy shackles of winter. The lung is very much about freedom and it can be severely harmed with imprisonment. Claustrophobia is a lung pathology that illustrates this.
The lung has a relationship to the bladder that can be pictured in the ideas of yushui. Because lung qi is constantly descending like rain, the lung provides the rest of the organs with fluids and helps to regulate urination. Without the constant raining of qi from the lungs, the water in the body will stagnate and can cause urinary problems and edema.
It is important to note the healthy functioning of the 雨水 time of year. There is plenty of rain and the rivers are released atop the mountain and begin to swell with water, flowing to the sea.
