Mythological Hero: Zhōu Gōng 周公
The mythological hero of the lung is Zhou Gong, or The Duke of Zhou. He is credited for finishing the Yi Jing, putting together The Rites of Zhou and creating the Yayue (Elegant music).
Zhou Gong assisted his brother in the founding of the Zhou Dynasty. His brother became the first king of the dynasty. After his brother’s death, he acted as regent to his nephew, until the boy was 7, at which point he returned power to him.
Just as Zhou Gong recognized, even in his role as regent, that the power of the Emperor was not his, so the healthy Lung recognizes that the Heart holds the place of Emperor within the body and it does not try to usurp that role. As Zhou Gong set the beat of the dynasty and allowed the young boy to follow suit, the lung sets the beat of the heart and then backs away, allowing the Heart to follow its true rhythm.
