The State of Qi 齊
Qi was a powerful state during the Spring and Autumn period. It was founded around 1050 BC, as one of the states of the Zhou Dynasty. In 221 BC, Qi was the last pre-imperial Chinese state to be conquered by Qin, and was therefore the last obstacle to Qin’s rule. Duke Huan of Qi, is probably the most well-known ruler of the Qi state. He coined a slogan, the gist of which is, “Respect the King and Defend Against the Barbarians.” This slogan was later revived by the Japanese at the time of the Meiji restoration.
According to Chapter 8 of the Suwen, the Liver holds the office of the General. It is the job of the general to plan the defense against those that might invade the body.
The character qi, 齊, is also pronounced, “zhai,” when it is used to represent the sacrificial grains.
It is supposed to represent harmony, and is supposedly a picture of ears in a cornfield, with some representation of a perspective of what is closer and behind them, marked by the lower lines. In this way, we are measuring those grains to determine the harmonies within them. That is exactly what the Liver does.
