The Sheng River 澠水
An ancient saying about the Sheng River is: “澠水不冰。瘦馬不渡”. This means that if the Sheng River is not frozen, skinny horses cannot cross it. As with the JieQi for this organ system, we see that the ideas of coldness and freezing play a big role here. In the Hexagram, it can be seen that there are two yang lines coming up into the Yin lines. It could be that at this time, the Yang is able to move because it has so much material to move into. The Sheng River denotes the same idea. If the water is moving and already filled with Yang, a young or skinny horse is not going to be able to cross it. The only way that the young/skinny horse will succeed is if the river is still weakened by the Winter.
The Liver has much power and courage, but it is new Yang, with only two lines, rising into the retreating Yin energy. The Yang is able to succeed because the world is still trapped in storage.
