Just Talking and Talking. Sometimes About Chinese Medicine.

Jiming (雞鳴) and Shier Yue (十二月)

Jiming is the double hour from 1am to 3am. It is considered the double hour when the Rooster crows, however, dawn is still many hours away. The Earthly branch, chou, 丑, that corresponds to this double arrow is a picture of a hand being tied with a rope. Here again is the idea of becoming unfurled, breaking out of the seed, and in any way overcoming some obstacle. The storage of Winter, or Night, was necessary in order to gain strength, but this is the time in which the strength is used to break free from the bondage of that storage.
The 12th month, or January, represents a similar process, in that this is the month that Nature uses the new Heavenly energy in order to break free from her shackles.
The Yue Ling says that in the 12th month, wild geese travel northwards, magpies build their nests, pheasants cry, hens sit, birds of prey become ferocious. The ice is abundant and the people cut and store it at this time, and the agricultural implements are repaired. This is the time that we break through and begin to live again.
