The Chang Jiang 長江
The first turn of the Yangtze at Shigu (石鼓), Yunnan Province, where the river turns 180 degrees from south- to north-bound.
At its source point, it is known as the Tongtian River (通天河), meaning literally, “the river that joins with Heaven.” A Tibetan legend talks of a travelling monk who fell into the river and upon his rescue he left the chant, “Om Ni Pad Me Hum” written on a stone for the people who lived there. The length of river passing through Sichuan province is called the Jinsha Jiang (金沙) or “Golden Sands River.”
In the Spring and Autumn Period, the Chang Jiang was known to be far milder and more peaceful than the Yellow River and was deemed more suitable for agriculture. In this way, the large intestine is filled with nutrient rich liquid which is absorbed through its lining to nourish every organ that is growing in the body.
Just as the Tongtian section of the Chang Jiang communicates with Heaven, so does the Large Intestine communicate with the Dao. A healthy large intestine will be a great storyteller, as storytelling is a way to bring people into balance through traversing the path of symbols to get to the heart. In a pathological state, the large intestine will transmit a crooked path.
