Hexagram 44: 姤 Gou

Hexagram 44 is composed of the inner trigram of wind and the outer trigram of heaven. This holds the idea that the principle of darkness is stirring from within, starting to move upwards. The female principle is coming to meet the male principle out of it’s own accord. This hexagram also goes with the 5th month because at the summer solstice, darkness is gradually beginning to creep in again.
The character for gou, 姤, is a picture of a woman standing and giving birth. The heart is related to the aspect of birth in that it represents the fire that is able to fill the material body. It is seen in the hexagram that there is one yin (substance) line below five yang (energy) lines. It is as if the substance is returning at this time, ready to be filled with the fire that defines it. It is during this time that the flavors and other aspects come into the plants, as they become truly aware of what they are.
