The Bladder Jieqi 節氣
Liqiu 立秋
The seasonal node of 立秋 begins on August 7th. This time is considered the “Start of Autumn.”立 is a picture of a person standing on the ground, and implies that something is being erected at this time. It can also mean, “instantaneous,” or “immediate.” The character, 秋, shows the grain radical on the left side, and the fire radical on the right. Perhaps this has to do with the color of the grain at this time, or the burning of the fields which would occur during this “killing season.” This is also the time when the grain has received the full summer’s heat, and so may be the grain that is filled with fire.
As the Bladder stores the fluids of the body and eliminates that which has been transformed by the Qi, it is almost as if the things are being cut down and stored, now that Autumn is here. Purging and storing go with this water organ.
Chushu 處暑
The second seasonal node begins on August 23rd. It literally means, “The Limit of Heat.” The cold is beginning to move in at this time and it begins to create a boundary. Once again, the Metal stem that goes with the Bladder can be seen. The clock opposite pair, the Lung can be seen here when it’s pathology shows through the willingness to cut people down for the pursuit of justice.
In order for the constriction of winter to happen, the cold must begin to create the boundaries. In order for the body to be protected, the Taiyang layer must be able to congeal and protect the outer surface.
